Joan Rivers talks "In Bed with Joan"

Can she talk? Everyone knows that Joan Rivers has lots to say, and this year she's really been letting it rip on In Bed with Joan, her little YouTube show that's changing the way everyone thinks of talk shows.

In a revealing, lengthy interview with Splitsider, Joan opens up about the ideas and inspirations behind "In Bed...," her standup, and the worldview that makes her so unique. Don't believe it? Here's a sample!
You’re one of the most well-known comics out there today, why are you doing a web chat show?
Because that’s where life is now. It’s all about social media and the internet. I look at my grandson and he’s on his iPad and he’s on his iPhone and he’s reading books that are, unfortunately, no longer hardcover books. And I love that; it’s the Wild West out there. I can say what I want on the show, I can ask the questions I want, and it’s just so much fun. And there’s nobody coming to say “Well, we’re the network, and we’d rather you not do that joke.” There’s none of that. It’s all new and wonderful.
It sure is, Joan. It sure is.

Dot Wiggin Band

Fans of "outsider music" are "Wiggin out"! Why? Why, because of the new album by the Dot Wiggin Band! Dot was the singer and guitarist for the Shaggs, a bizarre sister act that formed in the isolation of rural New Hampshire, pushed by their father/manager, who didn't notice or didn't care that instead of the rock 'n' roll chart-toppers he wanted to hear, the girls were producing twisted, out-of-tune oddities. That was in the 60s. Flashforward a couple decades, and artsy people got hip to the unusual sound and the Shaggs' accidental similarities to the Velvet Underground and other members of the avant garde. Flashforward some more decades, and all of a sudden the reclusive Dot has a new record out, and it is great! It's a jangly, indie rock charmer with more polished edges than the Shaggs ever knew, but it's still got some sweetly freakly moments. Hear the lead single, "Banana Bike," here

New "In Bed with Joan" with some lady

It's a new In Bed with Joan! Who's coming out of her closet tonight? Kris Jenner. She's kind of boring. Everyone probably knows that already. But Joan's funny! Watch anything with Joan--it doesn't matter who's on.

RuPaul & Cassandra Peterson?!

Wow, RuPaul's sensational RuPaul Drives knocks us out again! This time, the guest is Cassandra Peterson, the ghoul--that is, the gal--behind the indelible Elvira, Mistress of the Dark. RuPaul sings Cassandra's praises up and down, and really, you can never say enough about this unique performer. Cassandra talks about her many failed plans for retirement--the world wont let you go that easilly, missy!--and RuPaul names the hilarious Elvira, Mistress of the Dark as one of his top 5 favorite movies. The only thing wrong with this clip? It could be longer! Also, on Halloween, can we call him "BooPaul"?

RuPaul drives Marianne Williamson

So, we are a little late to RuPaul’s fun new youtube series, “RuPaul Drives…”, an informal talk show shot entirely in a moving car with Ru behind the wheel. It’s kind of like “In Bed with Joan,” which Joan Rivers does from her bed (RuPaul was a guest!). The show is quick and breezy, and to watch it is so, so easy! In the latest episode, RuPaul picks up Marianne Williamson, the mega-selling inspirational author and speaker. Marianne’s running for Congress, and Ru is skeptical (so are we). One big surprise: Marianne’s kind of a Lisa Vanderpump lookalike!

New "In Bed with Joan" with Eric Andre

Yes, Joan Rivers is back, with the 33rd episode of her unvarnished, outrageous online talk show, "In Bed with Joan"! Her guest? It's Eric Andre, and he's one of her boldest, most ribald yet! Also, it looks like Audible is going to be a regular sponsor for Joan--make that money, honey! We're sad, though. Audible sounds so nice, but at double the price of Netflix, it's just too, too expensive. Make us a deal, Audible!

You know what was great? That time Penn Jillette was on Joan's show!

Also great: Thanksgiving Gift Cards--from Amazon!

Elvira's "2 Big Pumpkins"

She's back! Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, the Queen of Halloween has just released a new 7" single that's also available on iTunes. It's the racy "2 Big Pumpkins," b/w "13 Days of Halloween," both by Fred Schneider of the B-52's! Follow the link, and you can hear "2 Big Pumpkins" for absolutely free, plus watch the video there that shows the record's unique, heat-responsive design. Plus, you get a peek at Elvira's storied boo-bs!

UPDATE: Looks like the record company has made the link members-only. Why? We don't know!

Robbing the Family Dollar store--in a wig!

An unidentified man held up a Family Dollar store down in Fayetteville, NC--and he did it while wearing a wig! The glamorous gunman first did a little shopping, then brought the merch up to the counter. When the cashier began to total the purchases, he brandished a gun and demanded money, possibly with a haughty toss of his fake, flowing locks. In contrast to California's terrifying but stylish Asian Wig Bandit, this fanciful felon has been described as a black male. But, like the Asian Wig Bandit, he hasn't been caught. Be careful out there, everybody!

Breaking Bad returning--in Spanish!

Breaking Bad has ended at last--but it will begin again! The show is being remade in Colombia as Metastasis, bitch! We can't wait to relive the dizzying adventures of Walt, in a whole new language and probably a whole new style. And who knows what new storylines may emerge--the Metastasis crew may as well come up with something original, since the US series is the ultimate spoiler. What do you predict will happen?

In Bed with Joan: 3 some, and commercials!

Joan Rivers is back with her phenomenal online talk show, In Bed with Joan, and she's celebrating the show's first threeway, with singer Jessie James and football star Eric Decker. Trivia tip: Jessie is NOT the girl who sings that "It's not about the money, money" song.

Something else is new in this episode--a commercial! It's for Audible, the audiobook subscription service. It sounds so great, but did you know it's almost $15 a month? Too much--it makes us sad.

Have you always wanted to be nude in a haunted house? Well, at last you can be--without having to worry about them calling the cops on you! Thrillseekers at Shocktoberfest in Sinking Spring, Pennsylvania, can pay $20 to doff their duds and test their nerves in the park's chamber of horrors. Why they'd want to, we dunno. Saved by the Bell stars reunite

Jessie Spano and A.C. Slater are back! That's right, Elizabeth Berkley and Mario Lopez from Saved by the Bell joined forces again to shoot a segment of Extra in front of what appears to be a small, somewhat attentive crowd. The two stars look as beautiful and fresh-faced as ever, so it's hard to believe that it's been almost 20 years since their groundbreaking hit was on the air.

Elizabeth, who famously starred in the scandalous Showgirls, is a contestant on the exciting new season of Dancing with the Stars. Surely, hunky Mario is wishing her the best!

Nude college students imitate Miley Cyrus, take down statue

Shocking news from Grand Valley State University in Michigan--students there have been paying tribute to salacious songstress Miley Cyrus by taking off all of their clothes and going for a swing on the campus's beloved pendulum sculpture.

But nude antic do have consequences, and now the sculpture's coming down! Officials fear one of the exuberant nude frolickers might injure themselves, or even bring the artwork crashing to the ground, and have ordered the sculpture be removed.

Really, though, it sounds like no one seems to think the loss of the sculpture is such a big whoop--one administrator even said "It's given us a few chuckles." Nude pendulum swinging will do that!

Nude blunder for Alison Pill

Pretty Newsroom star Alison Pill flashed her goodies on Twitter last year. Now, while making promotional appearances for her show, she says it was all a big mistake--a big, publicity-generating mistake!

Pill recently told Conan O'Brien, "...for about three months after it happened I couldn't... every time I met a new person I [kept thinking], 'Boobs! Nice to meet you, you've seen my boobs'" (see video above). Well, they don't call it show business for nothing!

Homespun Advice for Hollywood Celebrities: Miley Cyrus, VMA edition

Cafeteria Lady entertainment blog contributor Angela Grammer knows that the stars aren't so different from the rest of us--they could use some of the plainspoken wisdom shared in families across America and the world. Today, Angela shares her heartfelt advice for Miley Cyrus.

Miley, I've shared my advice with you in the past, but after your eye-opening, buttocks-oriented routine at the 2013 VMA awards, I think it's time to talk again.

You looked beautiful at the VMAs, and your singing was lovely. (I'm even starting to get used to the new, short hairdo!) But the spectacle you put on didn't show the world the best Miley. I do realize that "twerking" and simulating sex with Robin Thicke is a great way to grab headlines--there's no denying that no one's performance has been talked about more than yours.

Miley, America has grown up with you. Millions of girls have spent their lives looking up to you as a role model. I can only pray to the Lord that they won't now follow your lead and begin hoochie dancing in very public places.

Maybe that does not matter to you. Then listen to this: gimmicks and stunts do not make a long career. If you want to be remembered by the time the 2018 VMAs are on TV, it just might be time to put on some clothes. --Angela Grammer

Breaking Bad: More finale predictions!

Breaking Bad is coming to an end--perhaps you've heard! "Breaking Bad": Finale excitement

After a storied run on AMC, "Breaking Bad" is coming to an end. What will happen to its anti-hero, Walter White (aka Heisenberg) and his boy assistant, Robin Jesse? We'll start to find out on August 11, and then the suspense will drag on for the last several episodes. But until then, what happens is anyone's guess. Below, some of ours [SPOILERISH!].

Sharktopus vs. Mermantula: First look!

Sharktopus is coming back! The original movie from horror/exploitation god Roger Corman was a major hit for SyFy and kicked off a new era of B-movies, inspiring other fun films like Sharknado. And now, the Sharktopus sequel has been confirmed! Homespun Advice for Hollywood Celebrities: Lindsay Lohan

Cafeteria Lady entertainment blog contributor Angela Grammer knows that the stars aren't so different from the rest of us--they could use some of the plainspoken wisdom shared in families across America and the world. Today, Angela shares her heartfelt advice for Lindsay Lohan.

Lindsay, you’re out of rehab again--and, like it or not, you're also back in the public eye. As you know, keeping your sobriety is the most important thing right now, and you’ve slipped before, many times. But people will always give you another chance to accomplish this, because your life depends on it.

You’re still beautiful, young, and talented, but so were a lot of girls who came before you but aren’t with us today, girls like Anna Nicole Smith, Amy Winehouse, and Whitney Houston. Lindsay, we don’t want to add your name to that tragic list. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if you could be a strong survivor, someone who proves to other troubled young stars, like Miley Cyrus and Demi Lovato, that the path they’re on doesn’t have to be the road to doom?

It warms my heart to hear you’ve chosen to skip the premiere of your new film, The Canyons--glitz, glamor, and the paparazzis’ flashes are not what you need right now. Keep up the hard work, Lindsay, and you’ll be a great star--on the screen, and off. --Angela Grammer

"Orange Is the New Black" season 2: What will happen?

“Orange Is the New Black” is a smash success, and everyone is thrilled by the news that production for a second season is already underway. Season 1 ended in a hell of a cliffhanger, and there’s still lots of unfinished business for all our favorite characters. No leaks have come out of the season 2 set yet, but we can’t help speculating just what might be in store for us when the popular show returns.

Some of the tantalizing possibilities include:

The news of someone’s past vasectomy ruins someone else’s clever scheme. We can’t say more without divulging a whole bunch of spoilers.

Red lands back on top after her resourceful prison paella recipe proves to be an unlikely taste sensation.

Sophia’s wife, Crystal, marries the preacher--and he’s played by Denzel Washington, in a special guest appearance! As Sophia tearfully comes to terms with the situation, Crystal sings a rousing gospel number at the church, in an homage to Denzel’s film “The Preacher’s Wife.

The inmates form a Country/Western band, which becomes a surprise hit after a record producer overhears them rehearsing in the chapel on visitor’s day.

Piper wakes up. It was all a dream. Most of the other characters--including Alex, Larry, and everyone at the prison--don’t exist outside of her imagination. The season tells the story of her sophmore year at Smith College.

What do you think might happen in season 2? Tell us in the comments, or on Twitter--we’re here for you!

"Orange Is the New Black": Two opinions

Orange Is the New Black is the hottest new TV show of the year! The gripping comedy/drama, based on the memoir by Piper Kerman, is the most popular of streaming-video service Netflix's original programs. We asked two members of the Cafeteria Lady entertainment blog staff to tell us what they think of the show.

Rick Tyre: If this is "the new black," I'll keep the old black, thank you! First of all, this isn't even a TV show. It comes over the Internet on Netflix, which by the way isn't free, and this means I have to watch it on my computer. And when this sudsy soap opera wasn't crashing Internet Explorer, all I saw was a bunch of mopey gals in the same outfit sit around, crabbing about their problems or causing trouble. Who cares what they think? If these ladies knew what's what, they wouldn't be in the hoosegow in the first place.

Angela Grammer: The thought-provoking first season of "Orange Is the New Black" is so full of laughs, tears, and ideas, I might just have to watch it again! I "binge-watched" all 13 episodes in just a couple of days--that's how fascinating Piper, Alex, Crazy Eyes, and the other inmates were to me. For me, it was especially interesting to see how some of the older inmates, such as Red and Miss Claudette, were able to adapt and thrive in an unusual environment. I do think some of the harsh language and nudity is unnecessary, but overall, Orange Is the New Black is exciting, eye-opening, must-see television!

What do you think of Netflix's smash hit? Tell us in the comments, or on Twitter--we're here for you!

"Orange Is the New Black"'s Big Boo, Lea DeLaria

Everybody loves "Orange Is the New Black," the smash Netflix original that's changing the way we think about TV. Based on the bestselling memoir by ex-con Smith grad Piper Kerman, "Orange" has a timely setting, a great balance between grit and comedy, and a fascinating cast of characters. One of those is Big Boo, the big-hearted, dog-loving butch woman portrayed by Broadway's big, boisterous Lea DeLaria. In this video, DeLaria talks lots of "Orange," including how the role of Boo was created just for her. Let's hope that next season, the character gets more screen time--and her own flashback episode!

Shopper vomits at IKEA, sleeps on model bed

Some lady went to the IKEA in Netanya, Israel. That's a normal thing to do. Then, she vomited on a sofa. That's not-so-normal. Then she kept going:
Apparently unembarrassed by her antics, she sauntered over to the bed section, where she proceeded to remove her shoes, settle into a queen-sized, and fall fast asleep.
And you know what? Classy IKEA felt bad for the lady and let her stay there until the store closed! Such a heart-warming story.

New Lady Bunny video: "Take Me Up High"

Here's the new video from the sensational Lady Bunny! Bunny has become well known for her naughty song-parody videos, but this breezy dance floor treat is an original, written by the lady herself. The fun video references the Wizard of Oz, has a silly dancing-on-the-ceiling moment, and then takes the whole thing into outer space. And keep an eye out for special guest appearances by Princess Lockerooo, Muffinhead Daehniffum, and CJ Quinones. Get into it!

Deadly bear goes to Colorado bar, party people don't notice

So, a bear ambled into Lonigan's Saloon in Estes Park, Colorado. The deadly beast walked right onto the dancefloor, which fortunately was empty because everyone was whooping it up at the bar:
A man walking home behind the bar spotted the bear going in and shouted to alert people inside, Debbie Callahan said. But the bar crowd in the front didn't hear the man -- or realize the bear was headed their way, possibly because of the noise.
A deadly beast was headed their way, but they were just whooping it up! But:
The bear never joined the crowd. The man's yelling got its attention and, like a big dog, it followed the man out the back door.
Danger is everywhere, even when you're whooping it up. Have a good time, sure, but be careful out there, everybody!

Gang of cats attack woman and her dog

Bad, bad kitties! Terror struck in Franche-ComtĂ©, France, this week when a pack of six feral cats attacked a woman in broad daylight while she walked her dog. The victim's mother told the press, "The cats jumped on my daughter and managed to knock her over. They bit her on the leg and on her arms. They even pierced an artery." Quelle horreur!

Says the Independent, "It is thought the attack may be related to the high summer temperatures perhaps making the cats more aggressive than usual." Terrifying. Be careful out there, people!

Homespun Advice for Hollywood Celebrities: Miley Cyrus

Cafeteria Lady entertainment blog contributor Angela Grammer knows that the stars aren't so different from the rest of us--they could use some of the plainspoken wisdom shared in families across America and the world. Today, Angela shares her heartfelt advice for Miley Cyrus.

Miley, you are a beautiful and talented young woman (although I do think you looked even prettier when your hair was longer and your natural color). Your success is surely well deserved, and the joy and talent you've shown in your work has been an inspiration to girls everywhere.

But I worry about what those girls see when they look at you now. I also wonder what your fiance Liam Hemsworth thinks. I'm sure he loves you, but deep down in their hearts, not many men want to watch their future wife act sexual toward furniture, as the whole world has now seen you do in your latest video, "We Can't Stop." In the lyrics to that song, you sing about "dancing with molly."
