Homespun Advice for Hollywood Celebrities: Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon

Cafeteria Lady entertainment blog contributor Angela Grammer knows that the stars aren't so different from the rest of us--they could use some of the plainspoken wisdom shared in families across America and the world. Today, Angela shares her heartfelt advice for Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon.

Dear Mariah & Nick,

My heart is heavy as I read that Nick has confirmed that, yes, the rumors are true: after six years of marriage, the two of you have decided to divorce. I know that it is a difficult time for you, and for your entire family, but I hope you will have a moment to hear my heartfelt words for you.

It is especially sad to see the end of marriage between two people who have seemed so devoted to one another, so in love. All of America remembers how we rejoiced just three years ago when you welcomed your precious twin children into the world. And, Mariah, when you kept a vigil by Nick's side as he suffered from kidney failure, it was the kind of loving, caring behavior that every spouse should live up to.

Now, the waggling tongues of Hollywood say that cheating is tearing the two of you apart, and that Nick has made matters worse by telling stories in public that are just too, too public. I've known many couples hurt by these issues over the years. Some of them survive the challenge, but others do not. Bonnie Fuller suggests you stick it out. Maybe that could work. But nobody except you--not Bonnie, not me--knows what goes on when you two are behind closed doors.

So, Mariah and Nick, my advice is this: only you two really know if this marriage can be saved. And I beg of you to make sure the decision is right. But don't do it for me, for your heartbroken fans around the world, or even for yourselves. The ones you need to be thinking about now are your children.

My heart is with you at this tender time. --Angela Grammer

Homespun Advice for Hollywood Celebrities: Miley Cyrus, VMA edition

Cafeteria Lady entertainment blog contributor Angela Grammer knows that the stars aren't so different from the rest of us--they could use some of the plainspoken wisdom shared in families across America and the world. Today, Angela shares her heartfelt advice for Miley Cyrus.

Miley, I've shared my advice with you in the past, but after your eye-opening, buttocks-oriented routine at the 2013 VMA awards, I think it's time to talk again.

You looked beautiful at the VMAs, and your singing was lovely. (I'm even starting to get used to the new, short hairdo!) But the spectacle you put on didn't show the world the best Miley. I do realize that "twerking" and simulating sex with Robin Thicke is a great way to grab headlines--there's no denying that no one's performance has been talked about more than yours.

Miley, America has grown up with you. Millions of girls have spent their lives looking up to you as a role model. I can only pray to the Lord that they won't now follow your lead and begin hoochie dancing in very public places.

Maybe that does not matter to you. Then listen to this: gimmicks and stunts do not make a long career. If you want to be remembered by the time the 2018 VMAs are on TV, it just might be time to put on some clothes. --Angela Grammer

Homespun Advice for Hollywood Celebrities: Lindsay Lohan

Cafeteria Lady entertainment blog contributor Angela Grammer knows that the stars aren't so different from the rest of us--they could use some of the plainspoken wisdom shared in families across America and the world. Today, Angela shares her heartfelt advice for Lindsay Lohan.

Lindsay, you’re out of rehab again--and, like it or not, you're also back in the public eye. As you know, keeping your sobriety is the most important thing right now, and you’ve slipped before, many times. But people will always give you another chance to accomplish this, because your life depends on it.

You’re still beautiful, young, and talented, but so were a lot of girls who came before you but aren’t with us today, girls like Anna Nicole Smith, Amy Winehouse, and Whitney Houston. Lindsay, we don’t want to add your name to that tragic list. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if you could be a strong survivor, someone who proves to other troubled young stars, like Miley Cyrus and Demi Lovato, that the path they’re on doesn’t have to be the road to doom?

It warms my heart to hear you’ve chosen to skip the premiere of your new film, The Canyons--glitz, glamor, and the paparazzis’ flashes are not what you need right now. Keep up the hard work, Lindsay, and you’ll be a great star--on the screen, and off. --Angela Grammer
