Our Oscar predictions

The Academy Awards are finally here, and the excitement is mounting throughout the USA and the world! What everyone's asking themselves is Who will win?! Here's what we think!

Best Picture

Nominees: American Hustle, Captain Phillips, Dallas Buyers Club, Gravity, Her, Nebraska, Philomena, 12 Years a Slave, the Wolf of Wall Street

And the winner is: Gravity. It's a safe choice, but it looks adventurous, basically because it reminds people of 2001. The Academy loves that kind of dodge.

Best Director

Nominees: Alfonso Cuaron, "Gravity"; Steve McQueen, "12 Years a Slave"; Alexander Payne, "Nebraska"; David O. Russell, "American Hustle"; Martin Scorsese, "The Wolf of Wall Street"

And the winner is: Probably Martin Scorsese--everybody loves the guy, and Oscar loves a safe pick. Still, Alexander Payne's on something of a roll lately, plus coming in from the art-house cold to boffo box office success could spell Oscar gold for Gravity's Alfonso Cuaron!

Best Actor

Nominees: Christian Bale, "American Hustle"; Bruce Dern, "Nebraska"; Chiwetel Ejiofor, "12 Years a Slave"; Matthew McConaughey, "Dallas Buyers Club"; Leonardo DiCaprio, "The Wolf of Wall Street"

And the winner is: So hard to call! Bale, McConaughey, and DiCaprio are all established and beloved movie stars; Dern is a legend harkening back to Tinseltown's 70s heyday; and Ejiofor was riveting in his role. But McConaughey is the male Sandra Bullock and basically it's his turn.

Best Actress

Nominees: Amy Adams, "American Hustle”; Cate Blanchett, "Blue Jasmine”; Judi Dench, “Philomena”; Meryl Streep, "August: Osage County”; Sandra Bullock, "Gravity"

And the winner is: Meryl! A fourth Oscar nod will put her in a tie with Katherine Hepburn for most Oscars ever. If she gets this, the Academy can play up the suspense of a possible new record for years to come!

Best Supporting Actor

Nominees: Barkhad Abdi, "Captain Phillips”; Bradley Cooper, "American Hustle”; Michael Fassbender, "12 Years a Slave”; Jonah Hill, "The Wolf of Wall Street”; Jared Leto, "Dallas Buyers Club"

And the winner is: Bradley Cooper! Everybody loves this guy, just as assuredly as they all love Martin Scorsese.

Best Supporting Actress

Nominees: Sally Hawkins, "Blue Jasmine”; Jennifer Lawrence, "American Hustle”; Lupita Nyong'o, "12 Years a Slave”; Julia Roberts, "August: Osage County”; June Squibb, "Nebraska"

And the winner is: Probably not Jennifer Lawrence, but everyone loves her just as surely as they love Bradley Cooper. But she just got an Oscar last year, and they do like to spread it around a little bit. We're calling it for Lupita!

Well--fingers crossed everybody. Soon, the exciting results will be revealed! See you on Twitter!
